La Mirada crime rate increases in 2010

La Mirada remained one of the safest cities in Los Angeles County in 2010 despite an eight percent increase in reported crime in the city compared to 2009.

Despite the overall increase, the occurrence of violent crime dropped 6 percent last year. An increase in reported theft was the main culprit in the 2010 overall rate uptick.

The FBI collects crime information from jurisdictions in all states, and information most widely used for comparison is known as Part I crimes.

Part I crimes consist of incidents of homicide, rape, aggravated assault with a weapon or resulting in great bodily injury, robbery, burglary, theft, and arson.

La Mirada experienced 808 reported crimes in 2010, up from 746 in 2009. However when compared to reported crime in 2005, the city has seen a 42 percent drop over a five year period.

The only nearby city with a lower overall crime rate is La Habra Heights which statistically benefits from a lack of business and industrial districts which are a major factor in crime.

There were 74 reports of violent crime in the city last year, down from the 79 documented in 2009.

One area of concern was an increase in armed robbery last year by 48 percent. The number of robberies reported went from 21 to 31 last year, but the trend is still down from the 40 reported in 2005.

Aggravated assault which includes domestic violence resulting in great bodily injury showed a 26 percent drop last year, and an even more impressive 51 percent decline from 2005.

There were no homicides in La Mirada in 2010.

Burglary showed a continued decline in 2010 after falling 34 percent from 2009 and 63 percent over the past five years.

Theft, including shoplifting rose 29 percent, and auto theft was up 12 percent to 113.
