Public Hearing on I-5 widening agreement tops La Mirada Council Agenda

La Mirada-  The La Mirada City Council agenda for tonight is a bit longer than usual with city officials considering funding to several public service agencies and a public hearing on the I-5 widening project.

At tonight's public hearing the council will hear public comments before voting on entering into an agreement with Caltrans on plans for the widening project within the city limits.

The agreement addresses which properties will be acquired for the right-of-way, streets the will be altered, or closed, and a blue print of how the area will look after completion.

The current blue-print shows both north and southbound off ramps at Valley View Avenue being shifted to the north side of Valley View Ave into Santa Fe Springs with the north bound exit intersecting near the Carl's Jr.

The southbound exit will be an above grade off ramp design similar to those on the same freeway now built at Magnolia St, Brookhurst St, and Euclid Ave.

The project eliminates both portions of Freeway Dr and Firestone Blvd that run under the Valley View Av overpass, and the northbound off-ramp near the Gateway restaurants will no longer be used.

The proposed alignment will cause a number of properties between the freeway and railroad tracks to be acquired for use including properties near the former Denny's and Star Metal.

Further south at about Trojan Way expansion will focus on the north side sparing the Camping World and former Chevrolet dealer properties.

Also at tonight's 6:30 p.m. meeting council is expected to approve several funding requests for community organizations.

Probably the most negotiated and discussed funding request over several months is the services agreement with Straight Talk which provides a number of counseling services locally and is expected to have a 25% funding cut approved tonight.

As proposed Straight Talk will continue to provide crisis and individual counseling to La Miradans. Services were provided to 426 city residents last fiscal year.

School based counseling and community outreach will continue, however the Teen Support, Men's, and Women's groups will be eliminated.

Also tonight the La Mirada Symphony is likely to see a full funding request approved for their 2010-11 season.

With the approval the city enables the Symphony to continue many community events and projects, including four free concerts in a season that will host four guest conductors, of which one will be selected the new Symphony conductor.
