DOWNEY- The serial bank robber dubbed the 'Balding Bandit' by FBI investigators appeared in Downey Superior Court Wednesday entering a plea of not guilty in connection with the robbery of three La Mirada banks.

Steven Gary Platis, 44, of East Whittier is accused of robbing the La Mirada branch of Chase Bank twice, on May 14 and July 23, and Banco Popular at 12323 La Mirada Blvd on Sept 9.

Platis was arrested early Monday morning at a Mojave Desert home in Hesperia after a tipster that had seen media coverage of the robberies disclosed where he could be found hiding out.

In court Wednesday the judge reduced bail in the robbery charges from $500,000 to $75,000, and Platis is also being held on another $20,000 warrant out of Orange County North Court relating to a failure to appear in relation to a September 2009 vandalism incident.

Platis will appear next on the robbery charges back in Downey Court on September 22 and is being held on a total bail of $95,000 at Twin Towers Correctional Center.
