Two local races still too close to call

Nov. 10, 2018  6:32 p.m.

Jorge Tirado, the only La Miradan on last Tuesday's ballot still maintains a lead to capture the 4th of
four available seats on the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified Scholl District board.

Tirado leads Norma Amezcua of Norwalk by 351 votes. 8,336 votes have been tallied so far for Tirado and 7,985 for Amezcua.

Registrar's officials said yesterday there were still more than 900,000 vote-by-mail and provisional ballots remaining to be counted.

Traditional demographics of early voters suggest more will come from La Mirada to the benefit of Tirado.

In the north end of the city, the District 5 seat on the Rio Hondo College Board incumbent Madeline Shapiro has narrowed the gap with challenger Oscar Valladares to 420 votes.

Shapiro, a former educator with the East Whittier School District played a large role in an effort that now provides all full-time students a tuition-free education.
