Alejandro Lazo, 21, and Reyna Paola Gomez 26, both from Whittier were both arrested this morning by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau investigators and are scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow (May 5) at the Downey Courthouse at 8:30 a.m..
Bail has been set at $12,050,000 for Gomez, and Lazo is not eligible for bail due to a parole violation hold placed on him by state corrections.
Lazo and Gomez became persons of interest Saturday evening after both were found shot inside a stolen vehicle at the Budget Inn on Firestone Blvd, and in possession of a handgun, and also closely matching the description of the shooters involved in the earlier crimes.
An unconfirmed news report televised Monday reported that Lazo and Gomez had shot each other.
The two suspects were initially treated at UCI Medical Center in Orange, and were both moved to the jail ward at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles early Monday.
Both suspects had already been facing charges related to the stolen car and handgun from the motel. The weapon seized at the time of arrest was eliminated by ballistics experts as being used to kill Jose Sahagun of Norwalk and wound two others in a series of random attacks.
A quick check of local court and arrest records show Alejandro Lazo has been in and out of jail repeatedly stretching back at least the past three years, including a 2015 felony violent crime that sent him to state prison.
Recent arrests of Lazo by area law enforcement agencies include:
05/05/14 An arrest by deputies for using a controlled substance.
12/24/14 Arrested again by deputies for petty theft (these are usually shoplifting cases).
02/18/15 An arrest by Norwalk deputies for possessing a controlled substance.
08/16/15 Arrested by Norwalk Station deputies on a robbery charge. Lazo was released pending trial on a bond Aug 29. While out on bond he was arrested again on a new drug charge, and having his release revoked. The robbery case concluded in February 2016 which resulted in a 3-year state prison sentence after Lazo entered a guilty plea to a charge of extortion using force or fear, and second charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
11/09/15 This is the day Lazo was arrested while out on bond for possession of a controlled substance by Long Beach police. It is unclear why Lazo was set free three days later. This sort of behavior while free under conditions of release on bond would certainly be grounds to hold another bail/bond hearing due to concerns for public safety.
12/18/15 The court ended Lazo's release on bond, and would remain in custody until completing his state prison sentence, less good behavior credit, which results in an inmate only serving half of their sentence. On April 11, 2016 Alejandro Lazo was transferred to the state corrections intake in the Kern County.
04.04/17 Several weeks ago Lazo once again is arrested by Norwalk Station deputies for possessing burglary tools with intent to commit a crime. Lazo was released after seven hours in custody. It is not known at the time of this report if this case is still pending, prosecution, or has been closed.
Reyna Paula Gomez also has had a number of local arrests in recent years, including:
09/26/14 Deputies arrested Gomez for possession of a controlled substance.
01/28/15 Gomez was arrested by Norwalk deputies for receiving an access card not belonging to her and having intent To defraud
02/13/15 Reyna Gomez is again arrested by deputies another charge of possession of a controlled substance.
07/01/15 Whittier police officers arrest Gomez in Santa Fe Springs on two bench warrants that were issued after she failed to appear on the two cases from earlier in 2015. Arresting officers also sought two new charges alleging 1) Possession of a controlled substance transport or sales, 2) Embezzlement.
The request for new charges was rejected by the DA"s office the following day for insufficient evidence, however Gomez remained jailed pending the earlier 2015 cases until the following week where she accepted a 180-day sentence in exchange for a guilty pleas in both cases.
Likely overcrowding at Los Angeles County jails for women led to an early release on August 16.
08/31/15 Reyna Gomez was again booked into Norwalk Sheriff's Station for a misdemeanor charge not indicated in public records. She was released 14 hours later. The disposition is unclear.
03/17/16 Officers in San Bernardino County arrested Gomez, alleging she took a vehicle without the owners's consent.
