Court proceedings were delayed while both suspects continued to recover from the gunshot wounds each received while sitting in a stolen car at a Santa Fe Springs motel several hours after the random shootings.
Alejandro Lazo, 21, and Reyna Gomez, 26, are both documented street gang members and have been charged with one count each of murder, 14 counts of attempted murder, and one count alleging taking a vehicle during a carjacking..Gomez also was charged with torture after she allegedly shot one of his victims in the pubic area. Bail to $16,050,000 on Thursday for each of the suspects.
The District Attorney's Office has not revealed if this will be a capital crime, death penalty case. The death penalty is allowed in any murder where shots are fired from a vehicle.
Lazo continues to be held in the Medical Ward at USC Medical Center, while Gomez was moved out of the same medical facility yesterday and is now being held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Downtown Los Angeles.
Detectives said the investigation is still very active with detectives attempting to identify additional suspects that participated in some of the violence last Saturday over a 7-hour period, including the person that shot Lazo and Gomez. Detectives are expecting tpo make further arrests in the case.
An unconfirmed report broadcast by KNBC earlier in the week that Lazo and Gomez had shot each other turned out to be erroneous information..The pair have been in a relationship for several years.
The new charges against Lazo, if convicted would return him to state prison for life after just being released on parole in November 2016 being convicted of extortion and assault with a deadly weapon charges.. He is still currently on active parole after serving part of a 3-year sentence.
Reyna Gomez was also received from incarceration that same month after leading Fontana police on a short vehicle pursuit in a stolen car on March 27, 2016., Four days later she accepted a plea deal, that dropped two additional charges, one for the eluding police during the car chase and ironically a charge that increases the penalty for someone having a previous auto theft conviction, as Gomez had been.
During sentencing Gomez received a 16-month jail term to be served in a local county facility. The sentence the shortest allowed according to judicial guidelines allowed Gomez to serve only eight months after custody credits are factored in. Prior to realignment the sentence would have been served in a state prison for a longer period of time under previous credit rules.
It was also learned Thursday that there was a fourth shooting victim last Saturday, who now appears to have been the first victim also.
The violence began about 1:15 p.m with a shooting of a man in the 10000 block of Carmenita Road in South Whittier..
About an hour later came the next report, a carjacking on Rosehedge Drive near Sorenson Park in West Whittier. The vehcile that was taken was the Navigator that would soon be used in at least five more shootings before Lazo and Gomez themselves would end up being shot in an odd turn of events
Soon after the Navigator was taken, a man walking neat the Starbucks at Whittier Blvd and Colima Road was shot in the leg.

There were no injuries in the net two car-to-car shootings in South Whittier at Colima and Lambert Roads, and again at Valley View Avenue and Imperial Hwy as that afternoon trail of terror entered La Mirada.
About a mile further east on Imperial just before 4 P.M. a man suffered a gunshot wound that was deemed not-life threatening in the 15000 block of Imperial Highway near the Del Taco Restaurant.
As Lazo and Gomez rounded the turn south onto Santa Gertrudes Avenue the killers encountered Jose Sahagun, 44, of Norwalk, who was stopped for a red light at Alicante Road, his wife and two sons were also riding in the vehicle.. Without provocation the killers fired without any apparent provocation or reason.
Paramedics and firefighters from Stations 49 and 15 worked on Sahagun valiantly at the scene and in the ambulance ride to UCI Medical Center trauma center, but died there shortly after arrival.
(Editor's Note: The closest trauma centers to La Mirada are UCI in Orange and St. Francis in Lynwood. The trauma unit once at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier closed decades ago.. Trauma centers are designed to have a surgery team on call that can assemble in time to enable a emergency surgery to begin within 60 minutes of the incident occurring.)
The suspects abandoned the Navigator taken in the West Whittier carjacking at Amelia F. Mayberry Park on Meyer Road in South Whittier.
Lazo and Gomez were next heard from later that evening Whittier Police responding to calls regarding shots fired at The Budget Inn at 13420 Firestone Blvd. in Santa Fe Springs found the couple shot in the parking lot. It was an alert officer who noticed the victims there closely resembled that of the earlier shooters.
