Prep Football: La Mirada routs Artesia 58-7 in league opener


LAKEWOOD- After a disappointing (1-3) start against non-league teams, the Matadores' offense was firing on all cylinders in a 58-7 blowout versus Artesia (0-4,0-1) Friday night.

La Mirada Quarterback Shane Blood connected on 10 of 14 attempts for 223 yards, which featured four touchdown passes on four consecutive passes early in the game.

The Matadores' (2-3, 1-0) playing their Suburban League opener were up 58-0 by half-time, then sitting out their key players in the 2nd half.

Artesia playing their homecoming game did not get on the scoreboard until the final minutes when Deveon Israel rushed on a 75 yard pass from Francisco Galan.

Next Up: John Glenn (0-5, 0-1) Friday October 8 at La Mirada High School 7 p.m.

Bellflower 63, Glenn 13: Ryan Hunley scored two touchdowns as Bellflower (4-1, 1-0) remains on top of the Suburban League with the victory at Excelsior Stadium.

Mayfair 41, Norwalk 28: Jerry Smith scored four touchdowns as Mayfair (2-3, 1-0) upset Norwalk (2-3, 0-1) at Bellflower Stadium.

Pioneer 17, Cerritos 16: Cerritos (1-3, 0-0) nearly tied it with just minutes remaining fumbling on the extra point attempt in a non-league game at Pioneer (2-2) Stadium in Whittier.

La Serna 44, Warren 7: La Serna running back Richard Alvarez scored two touchdowns to lead the Lancers (4-1, 0-0) to an easy win versus the Bears (1-4, 0-0) at California High Stadium in Whittier.

St John Bosco 25, La Habra 17: The Braves (4-1, 0-0) scored two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to break loose a close game against the Highlanders (2-3, 0-0) at their home field in Bellflower.
