Source of gas leak odor sought in widespread area of La Mirada and South Whittier

LA MIRADA- Sheriff and fire units are searching a wide area of northwest La Mirada and South Whittier early Friday morning attempting to find the source of an odor of natural gas.

Norwalk Sheriff's Station began receiving calls shortly after midnight from the area of Valley View Avenue and Mansa Drive about the odor.

Both deputies and several fire units were dispatched to the area but were not able to locate the odor on arrival.

As quickly as the odor disappeared, it reappeared, and has been intermittent since.

Calls have been received as far north as Leffingwell Road.

The Southern California Gas Company is also in the area attempting to locate.

(UPDATE) 7:00 a.m.

After an extensive investigation by Southern California Gas company crews in the area the intermittent odor was determined to not be hazardous originating from a distant plant refining petroleum products with the odor brought to the area by night time breezes.

The utility had been receiving calls for the past day from concerned citizens.
