College Soccer: Cal State LA hands Biola another 1-0 loss

LOS ANGELES- With 21 new players, Cal State L.A. is a team that is in a rebuilding mode, and despite being a NCAA Division 2 team, Biola was the team to beat, with a roster stacked with more talent and experience.

Biola played an inspired road game Thursday afternoon at CSLA's Jesse Owens Track', but lost 1-0, after the Golden Eagles went ahead early in the second half and caught a very lucky break on their way to a win in their regular season opener.

A pair of Golden Eagles playing their first collegiate level games teamed up for the only goal of the game as Tim van den Bergh running down the right got past a Biola defender sending the ball towards the goal and then deflected into the net by Adam Hughes at 47:58.

Just minutes later Biola almost tied it with their best chance of the night Cody Shelton had lots of room and hit the post with Golden Eagles goalkeeper James Irwin out of position at 50:33.

Biola (0-2) was outshot 12-8, and had 10 corner kicks versus five for Cal State L.A.

Biola goalkeeper Aaron Fenlason stopped four of five shots on goal, and the Golden Eagle's Irwin stopped all four.

Thursday's game was the first of five in a row for the Eagles on the road, and will try again to get their first win Saturday at Whittier College at 11:00 a.m.
