LA MIRADA- No major problems have been reported in the city as of 1 p.m. from an intense Santa Ana condition that moved into the region this morning and will begin weakening as the afternoon progresses according to the National Weather Service Office in Oxnard.
Strong Northeast winds arrived around sunrise and strengthened through the morning hitting a peak from about 11 a.m. until just before 1 p.m. including a sustained wind of 25 mph for a period of time and a gust that reached 40 mph.
A wind advisory is in effect until 3 p.m. and warns of winds gusts that could approach 55 mph. It will remain windy through the night and into Tuesday, but will be much weaker than earlier at 5 to 10 mph gusting to 15.
Today's winds were the strongest since a 45 mph gust and sustained winds at 30 mph were recorded earlier this year on April 18.
No power outages were reported in La Mirada as of 2 p.m.
Deputies kept busy responding to an uptick in burglar alarms that were related to the wind blowing open unsecured doors and windows as well as several wind-driven events in nearby South and East Whittier as fire crew kept busy checking an increase in fire alarm activations as well as reports of power lines being downed.
At 10:33 a.m. County Fire received a call about power wires down in the 10000 block of Guilford Avenue. About four minutes later 911 lines at Norwalk Sheriff's Station began to light up with multiple callers reporting that a home was now on fire there.
230 homes in the area of the fire were without power.
Also in South Whittier, winds sent deputies and County Fire to several live power line down reports including one in the 10500 block of Victoria Ave at about 10:25 a.m. after gusty winds toppled a tree onto live power lines.
The residence sustained moderate damage in the fire that a fire captain stated was driven by the wind on their arrival.
In East Whittier are tree and power lines were reported to have been blown down onto a vehicle at Stany Road and Fernview Street just before 11 a.m. No injuries were reported and 63 customers are without power.
It will be slightly warmer and less windy Tuesday with winds of 5 to 10 mph and a high of 86.
