La Mirada crime rate drops sharply in 2018 over previous year


Violent crimes are down more than 38% from 2017 


La Mirada-   Sharp drops were reported in both violent and property crimes reported to Sheriff's deputies during the first seven months of 2018 when compared to the same time period in 2017 remaining the safest city in the area.

Norwalk, South Whittier, and East Whittier experienced minor upticks in reported crimes, while Cerritos saw property crimes fall more than 26%, and violent crime reports increase 22%. 

The rate of all crimes tracked by the F.B.I. in all jurisdictions nationwide also known as Part One crimes reported in La Mirada from January 1st through July 31, 2018, fell to 507, a  16.75% decrease when compared to 609 crimes reported during the same period in 2017.

Reports of violent crime saw the biggest drop falling to 36, down 23 from the 59 reported in 2017 a 38.98% decrease.

Property crimes reported in La Mirada were also down 14.36% from 550 in the first seven months of 2017 to 471 this year

**  Other theft of property including vehicle break-ins, shoplifting, 

Unincorporated South and East Whittier saw an overall increase of 5% in crime, including an 11.86% increase in violent crimes that rose from 118 to 132. Norwalk crimes increased 3.86% including a 4.49& hike in the violent crime rate.

La Mirada has an enviable violent crime rate at 120 per 100,000 persons when compared to other nearby cities policed by the Sheriff's Department and those with their own police agencies.
