Mejia |
Charges were filed today in connection with the killing of Whittier police officer Keith Boyer, and the shooting of a second officer last week, which if proven could result in the death penalty.
Michael Christopher Mejia, 29, is also accused shooting to death his cousin Ray Torrres, 47, at a residence in City Terrace several hours before the shooting of the Whittier officers.
Mejia will be arraigned at Bellflower Superior Court on two counts of murder, one count each of attempted murder, carjacking, and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.
Mejia has an extensive criminal history that includes robbery, and auto theft convictions, and is a documented street gang member.
While serving his state prison term Mejia was housed at Pelican Bay near Crescent City, that was built to isolate the state's most dangerous inmates.
The second officer Patrick Hazell was released from UCI Medical Center several days after the shooting on Monday Feb. 20 and is at home recovering from his injuries.
Funeral services will be held Friday for Officer Keith Boyer at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
