Preps Football: Matadores climb to 1st place tie with victory against John Glenn


LA MIRADA- La Mirada got off to a quick start Friday night leading 34-0 at halftime, enroute to their second victory in a row, defeating John Glenn 48-6 at Goodman Stadium.

Matadores quarterback Shane Blood completed all five attempts for 50 yards. With the game well in hand Blood sat out the end of the game for the second week in a row to get reserve quarterback Jeremy Shirley some playing time.

Shirley completed 2 of 3 attempts for 16 yards.

The Eagles offense was limited to a touchdown by Anthony Escobar in the third quarter.

John Glenn (0-6, 0-2) along with Artesia(0-5, 0-1) remain winless and share the bottom of the Suburban League standings.

The victory puts La Mirada (3-3, 2-0) in a first place tie with Mayfair (3-3, 2-0) in league standings.

Next Friday the Matadores will travel to Gahr High in Cerritos to face a struggling Cerritos (1-4, 0-1) that will attempt to bounce back from a 39-10 loss to Mayfair Friday night.

Other Friday games:

Norwalk 34, Bellfower 14: Running back Billy Moore rushed a total of 214 yards and had three touchdowns for Norwalk (3-3, 1-1) at Excelsior Stadium, leading the Lancers over the Buccaneers (4-2, 1-1).

Mayfair 39, Cerritos 10: Mayfair (3-3, 2-0) moved into a first place tie in league standings with a victory against Cerritos (1-4, 0-1) at Mayfair High.

Westminster 41, Artesia 14: Robert Gonzales scored three touchdown runs leading Westminster (1-4, 0-0) to their first win in at home against winless Artesia (0-5, 0-1).

Cantwell- Sacred Heart 35, Whittier Christian 28: Whittier Christian (5-1, 0-0) failed to rally from a 35-14 deficit in the second half and lost their first game of the season to Cantwell on the road in Montebello.

  1. Why did LM alum RB Justin Torres quit the football team at the U of Colorado and return home? Must have serious problems to give up a full scholarship and the chance to play D1 football as a true freshman. What a shame and a disappointment.
